Demerit points

You can get demerit points for breaking road rules. The number of demerit points you get depends on how likely your action is to cause a crash.

When you accumulate a certain number of demerit points you will lose your licence.

  • If you have a learner's permit or a provisional licence and you get 4 or more demerit points, you'll lose your licence for at least 6 months.
  • If you have a full licence and you get 12 to 15 demerit points, you'll lose your licence for 3 months.
  • If you have a full licence and you get 16 to 20 demerit points, you'll lose your licence for 4 months.
  • If you have a full licence and you get more than 20 demerit points, you'll lose your licence for 5 months.

If you want to know how many demerit points you have, you can check it here on the SA Government website.

  • Create a mySAGOV account online – this is an online account where you can monitor your demerit points, update your home address, check your licence and car registration expiry date as well as other things to do with your car.
  • A Victims of Crime Levy ($60) applies in addition to all expiation fees/fines.
