The State Government and Bike SA are partnering to deliver an expanded Way2Go Bike Ed program to educate children about bicycle and road safety.

The state’s $3.2 million investment will mean bicycle training and education for thousands of extra primary school students.

The program aims to help children develop responsible behaviours, attitudes and decision-making skills for the safe use of bicycles both on and off our roads.

The increase in funding which will see over 8,000 primary school children learning to ride to and from school each year by 2018.

The expanded program will provide tailored cycling and road safety education, including more time for practical instruction; will be better at accommodating schools of varying sizes; and will offer a new online teacher resource linked to the Australian curriculum.

Expanding education programs for cycling was identified as a priority in the State Government’s response to the Citizen’s Jury on Sharing the Road Safely.

The Way2Go Bike Ed program has been conducted in South Australia since 1995. The new contract with Bike SA will start in January 2016 for four years. Each year, an additional team of four will be employed to implement the expanded program.
