Lower Speed Limit for Swanport Bridge

27 November 2015

The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) has introduced a permanent 80 km/h speed limit on Swanport Bridge.

The move, which reduces the speed from its previous 110 km/h, is part of a raft of measures to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries on our State’s arterial roads.

DPTI Chief Operating Officer, Paul Gelston said the measure is in line with South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy 2020 – Towards Zero Together.

"The strategy has a target to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries by at least 30 percent by 2020 to less than 80 fatalities and 800 serious injuries respectively.

"To achieve this, it is crucial that the known risks are addressed, using a range of proven road safety measures. Setting appropriate speed limits is one of those measures", Mr Gelston said.

Temporary speed restrictions have been in place on Swanport Bridge for a number of months, with a speed limit of 80km/h.

The South Eastern Freeway / Princes Highway / Swanport Bridge arterial traffic route forms a part of the Adelaide – Melbourne road corridor linking South Australia with other states, territories and capital cities via the National Highway system.
