South East to benefit from major Budget investment in roads

22 June 2015

A large section of the Riddoch Highway will benefit from an extra $40 million investment in road safety measures in this year’s State Budget.

The SA Government said one of the first projects would involve shoulder sealing and audio tactile line marking on two sections of the Riddoch Highway.

This highway in the South East has already benefited from $1.1 million in safety improvements this current financial year, with the installation of guard fence, shoulder sealing and pavements works.

The new works will cover about 20 kilometres between Willalooka and Padthaway and 14 kilometres between Keppoch and Naracoorte.

Run-off road crashes and head-on crashes account for 72 per cent of all fatal and serious injury crashes in rural areas but shoulder sealing can prevent drivers from losing control of their vehicles when they stray from the road.

Audio tactile line marking is another important safety measure. It alerts motorists when they veer out of their lane by creating noise and vibrations.

The Limestone Coast is South Australia’s gateway to Victoria and features important tourist and freight transport links.

An upgrade to the Riddoch Highway will help to support the region’s world class wine, dairy and processing industries as well as improve the safety of the road network for increasing tourism and freight traffic.

A freight traffic bypass of the historic Penola township, an important tourist centre for the region, is also being developed with stage 1 completed earlier this year.

Almost $1 million of shoulder sealing works were completed this financial year further south on the Southern Ports Highway.

The road safety funding is part of a $165 million road infrastructure stimulus package in this year’s State Budget to boost productivity, improve safety on regional and suburban roads, and support more than 400 construction jobs.
