Innovative safety solution raised in Kent Town

22 May 2015

A unique raised platform at the junction of Rundle Street and The Parade West in Kent Town has been completed.

The solution implemented is a raised platform, and is the first of its kind on an arterial road in South Australia.  It will help slow vehicles down at the junction, improving the safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The platform will require motorists to slow down as they enter this junction and works in a similar way to a speed hump, with the key difference being that the entire junction is raised.

Statistics show that almost half of all serious casualty crashes in metropolitan areas occur at intersections and junctions.

There have been 29 crashes at this intersection between 2004 and 2013, with 65 per cent of the crash types being right turn or right angle crashes. Of these 29 crashes, 18 were between vehicles and cyclists.

The project has included the installation of signage alerting motorists to the platform, upgrades to lighting at the junction and improvements to the local drainage system.

The funding for this project was provided through the State Government’s Responsive Road Safety Program and provides a safer environment for all road users at this busy junction.

The upgrade forms part of the Road Safety Action Plan 2013-2016 which aims to achieve a reduction in serious road casualties by 2020.
