New and recent changes to road rules

Among a series of road rules amendments that came into operation in March 2014 are changes affecting:

  • heavy vehicles (related to minimum distances between long vehicles and use of portable warning triangles for vehicles over 12 tonnes)
  • driving across a dividing strip with a pavement bar
  • motorcycle riders using mobile phones as a GPS
  • child restraints (specifying when a child aged four to seven may sit in the front seat of a vehicle).

These follow amendments in January 2014 that:

  • allow adults to ride a bicycle on the footpath while accompanying child cyclists
  • allow bicycle riders to enter green holding areas at traffic lights other than from a bicycle lane
  • introduce a new $340 expiation fee for longboarding under particular road conditions.

High powered vehicles definition is changing

South Australia has adopted the national definition for high powered vehicle restrictions for provisional licence drivers.

The change, which came into effect on 1 March, introduces a power-to-weight ratio limit of no greater than 130 kW/t for vehicles manufactured in or after 2010.

Changes to protect young drivers start in July

Changes to the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) aimed at keeping young, inexperienced drivers safe will come into operation from Monday 28 July.

The changes include passenger and night-time restrictions during the first year of driving unsupervised, which is when young drivers are at greatest risk.
