Stuart Highway Rest Areas
We are improving safety and productivity for heavy vehicles on the Stuart Highway.
The $5 million Stuart Highway Rest Areas project is jointly funded (80:20) by the Australian and South Australian governments.
Extending approximately 2700 kms between Port Augusta and Darwin, the Stuart Highway is an important arterial road for freight and tourism, providing access to major regional centres within South Australia, and is the primary link between Adelaide and Darwin.
The new and upgraded rest areas will improve safety, providing additional opportunities for heavy vehicle operators to safely stop and rest.
Latest News
Major construction of a new rest area south-west of Lake Hart at Wirraminna and the upgrade of the existing rest area at Bakers Well, south of Glendambo have now been completed. New shelters with tables and bench seating were installed at each location in late April, and both locations are now open to all road users.
