Greenhill Road Median Safety Improvements
Greenhill Road - Stages 1, 2, and 3
The Australian and State Governments have allocated $1.4 million to improve safety for all road users, pedestrians and cyclists on Greenhill Road, between Goodwood Road and George Street / Hutt Road.
Since February 2014 the department has been working with the local community and key stakeholders to develop a design for the medians on Greenhill Road which will improve safety for all road users.
Following community consultation, feedback was considered and the plans revised, where possible, so that safety improvements can be implemented.
Key changes from the original concept plans include:
- modifying the access arrangements to increase serviceability for local residents
- catering for the right turn movements into Joslin Street
- catering for the right turn movements out of Clark Street
- catering for the right turn movements out of Roberts Street
- adding in an extra u-turn facility to the east of Roberts Street
- reinstating the u-turn facility at Liston Street to cater for eastbound traffic
- installing 'Keep Clear' signage at junctions.
Community engagement has shown that there is a strong desire from residents to restrict parking on the approach to side streets to improve visibility when exiting these streets. As parking is the responsibility of Council, the department has requested that Unley Council review parking options along Greenhill Road for possible safety improvements.

Construction work on the Stage 1 – 3 improvements started in early February 2015 and is being completed in the following stages:
Stage 1 - George Street/Hutt Road to Unley Road - COMPLETE
Stage 2 - Unley Road to King William Road - UNDERWAY
Stage 3 - King William Road to Goodwood Road.
The Stage 1 works were successfully completed and the new median near Porter Street has already been adopted by the growing number of people choosing two wheels to get around the city.
It links the Rugby Street / Porter Street bicycle route through the City of Unley with the Frome St Bikeway in the City of Adelaide. An Unley resident recently emailed to thank DPTI for "the efficient manner in which the changes were made.
The alterations to the section between Unley Road and George Street are a terrific improvement to safety, access and amenity for both local residents, local businesses and transiting pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles." Another median user said, "Without cars speeding and turning from multiple directions, and a biking black spot fixed, I feel my trip to work is much safer. And I can tell you the prams and dog walkers are safer too."
Speed, lane and parking restrictions will be in place during construction, and road users are asked to use extra caution driving through the area when workers are on site.
Construction is scheduled for completion by May 2015 (weather permitting).
To minimise the construction period some night works will be undertaken. Night works will be managed to minimise disturbance to the local community as much as possible.
The Australian Government has allocated $500,000 to improve safety for all road users, pedestrians and cyclists on Greenhill Road, between Glen Osmond Road and George Street / Hutt Road.
Construction work on Stage 4 – between George Street / Hutt Road intersection and Glen Osmond Road is underway and includes:
- Modify the traffic signals at George Street / Hutt Road intersection to incorporate right turn signal arrows and cyclist push buttons;
- increase the capacity of right turn lane into Hutt Road; and
- increase the capacity of the right turn lanes on the western approach to Glen Osmond Road.
