Intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road and Junction Road, Balhannah

About the project

We are delivering the Adelaide Hills Productivity and Road Safety (PRS) Package to upgrade key strategic arterial roads in the region. The road improvements will support economic growth, improve road safety and increase fire resilience. The $150 million initiative is jointly funded by the Australian Government (80%) and South Australian Government (20%) over five years.

Onkaparinga Valley Road was identified as a key arterial road in the Adelaide Hills that would benefit from safety upgrades. Since May 2023, key activities undertaken to improve road safety have included increasing skid resistance, improving and widening sealed shoulders, as well as widening side roads.

The intersection of Onkaparinga Valley Road, Nairne Road and Junction Road in Balhannah will also be upgraded and a single-lane roundabout has been identified as the best outcome for improving safety at this location.

The construction of a roundabout was selected as the preferred treatment, as it achieves:

  • increased safety for all users of the intersection
  • improved traffic movements through the intersection
  • new and upgraded pedestrian crossing facilities
  • improved footpaths for better access around the intersection
