A Friday Note - 20 November 2015
Genesee + Wyoming Australia (head office Adelaide) announced last night that they had successfully achieved a zero injury rate across their business for the past year. I have asked their CEO Greg Pauline to come and share the secrets of their success with us.
COLLABORATION AND SERVICE
It’s amazing to think that over 40,000 people visit Adelaide every year from cruise ships docked at Outer Harbor. I met some of our newest visitors recently at Adelaide Rail Station and I’m delighted to report that they were full of praise for the way they had been able to travel into the city with ease and in comfort.
This was a true collaborative effort, with our rail ops area coordinating extra services for disembarking cruise ship passengers, ticketing staff ensuring passengers could easily purchase a daytrip, frontline services staff on hand to provide assistance, and our assets area maintaining attractive amenities. We also encouraged returning passengers to recycle their Metro cards.
For many this would’ve been their first impression of Adelaide, so huge thanks to all our staff who worked together to make sure it was a positive one. I also want to pay particular thanks to Mimma Voulgarakis and Julie Whitehead from our frontline services area for their outstanding efforts.
The Reform section has facilitated a number of workshops with a broad cross-section of DPTI employees with the purpose of enabling each business area to challenge the way we work and to assist businesses to identify how they can continually improve to achieve efficient integration, best in class customer service, operational performance and a values based organisation. Feedback below from a recent workshop with Rail Operations Frontline Supervisors:

Robert Stopp, Manager Rail Operations stated that he was “extremely impressed in the interactions between the teams in identifying issues and actions”. WHITE RIBBON DAY
Wednesday, 25 November is White Ribbon Day, which raises awareness of violence against women. As part of the department’s White Ribbon Workplace Accreditation Program, workplaces are invited to host an event during the week of White Ribbon Day to encourage everyone to stand up, speak out and act to prevent violence against women. Consider hosting breakfast, morning or afternoon tea, or casual day, with donations going to this cause. Further details are available here.

Our footy buffs came out of the woodwork to name five SA Aboriginal AFL players from last season. Dylan Campbell from our customer experience area named Adam Goodes (born and raised in SA), Travis Varcoe, Eddie Betts, Danyle Pearce, and Lindsay Thomas. I’m looking forward to the first bounce of the new season already!
Can you name the women who carried the Olympic torch into the stadium for the Sydney Olympics in 2000, in order and their involvement with the Olympic movement? Extra points if you can name the man who handed the torch over to the first woman in the stadium.

APY JOBS EXPO
This coming Monday, APY Lands Main Access Road Upgrade project staff will be attending the Wiltja Jobs Expo at Woodville High School for the Anangu students who attend Wiltja Secondary School. The sessions will give secondary students an understanding of what the Department does though discussions with our trainees and the clip ‘A day in the life of DPTI’ followed by project specific information – the APY Lands animation and a brief project overview.
Well done to all our Corporate Cup participants for getting out and pounding the pavement. Pictured left is our Metrocard Unit Corporate Cup team receiving the most improved government team award, and right is Arthur Tanasovski who won fastest male over 2.25 km distance.
CODE OF ETHICS AWARENESS
An online awareness program for our new Code of Ethics for the South Australian Public Sector (Code of Ethics) will be launched on 30 November 2015. The release of this program complements a range of existing tools and resources which are available at the Office for the Public Sector website.
Planning reform milestone
Our department’s major legislative reform initiative – Minister Rau’s Planning, Development and Infrastructure Bill – passed the lower house at midnight on Tuesday. After three years of work, this is a major milestone.
This lays the basis for a truly integrated approach to planning, transport and infrastructure – the very reason the Premier brought us together as a single department. A lot of hard work has gone into reaching this milestone and I want to particularly congratulate Matthew Loader, Sue Rudall, Marko Klobas, Nick Buick, Simon Howes, Patrick Hansen, Mary-Ann Bloomfield and Libby Arcus from our legislative reform team, ably supported by others within the Development Division including Stuart Moseley, Anita Allen, Sally Smith, Andrew McKeegan, Chris Zafiropoulos, David Whiterod, Paul Stark, Indika Wijenayake, Alex Hart, Jodie Evans and Philippe Mortier. The work ethic of all of these people is amazing.
