Message from the Chief Executive
A couple of years ago one of our teams went out to the Northern Connector when it was in construction to do some safety inspections.
They made their observations, completed the paperwork that they had, and then returned to the office to enter the information into the system. But one of them had a light-bulb moment. "Why am I doing this twice?"
And so, because they were tech savvy, they developed an app. They took that back out to the site on the next inspection, and this time in real time, they recorded the information into the system, took photos as verification and then it was uploaded straight away into the system.
Fast forward to today, that app has been further developed and is now in broad use through the organisation.
For example our team in Facility Services used the app 23 times last month to do different safety observations that's helped them to provide each other with positive reinforcement about the things that are going well but also importantly to identify gaps where they could intervene and reduce risk.
The Survey123 app is one of the tools that we'll be using as we implement our new three-year safety strategy. The strategy's just been published online and I'd encourage you to download it and have a read.
It's all about creating a positive safety culture using things like safety observations to look at how we do our work and catch each other doing things right, and provide positive reinforcement, as well as finding opportunities where we could do better and reduce risk.
It's something I'd encourage everyone to get involved in because we all have a part to play in safety and we all want to work safe and go home safe.
Whyalla Secondary College on schedule
One of the portfolio of about 100 major projects being managed by our team in Building Projects (a part of Across Government Services) is the $100 million new Whyalla Secondary College being delivered on behalf of the Department for Education. This project will provide exceptional educational facilities for 1500 Whyalla students from Years 7 to 12.
The project is on schedule for completion in November this year, in readiness for students for the start of the 2022 school year. Internal fitouts are progressing very well, as are landscaping and external works, with the oval and soccer pitches now complete and ready for play.
Congratulations to the Building Projects team for finding solutions to the various challenges triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak. Your efforts to deliver this school project, and 70 others across the state in readiness for the 2022 school year, will make a difference for coming generations and their education.
Service SA looking good
Real progress continues to be made by the Service SA team, driving a reform program targeting excellence in customer service. A lot of work is going into digital service delivery, knowledge and customer management systems, process simplification, technology and phone system upgrades.
However, the most visible signs of improvement are in our service centres. The Currie Street Service Centre provided us the blueprint for the new format, and has received overwhelming positive customer feedback since opening in February last year. It became the model for Mount Barker’s new centre that opened earlier this year and for the Port Adelaide Service Centre relocation.
Upgrades to existing service centres are now being rolled out across the network, with Elizabeth refurbished last month and the new look Marion service centre opening on Monday. Stay tuned for more, with a fitout now under way for the Prospect Customer Service Centre.

It’s taken more than 12 months of intense work from members of our Goods and Services Contracts, Procurement, Policy and Systems teams to bring to life the implementation of the new Procurement Framework for goods and services, mandated by the DTF since cutting the State Procurement Board.
Given a $2 billion annual spend, our goods and services procurement is a significant economic driver and thereby a key element of our relationship with the South Australian community and businesses.
A new, user friendly Goods and Services Procurement and Contract Management intranet page has been set up to enable everyone with purchasing responsibilities to familiarise themselves with the Procurement Framework. New Road Safety Strategy update
The strategy team from our Road Safety, Policy and Research directorate has been very busy since the consultation period for South Australia’s Road Safety Strategy to 2031 ended three weeks ago.
More than 350 people completed the online survey and a further 60 written submissions were received from individuals and stakeholder organisations such as local government, Aboriginal organisations, peak bodies and other road safety stakeholders.
The team is currently assessing the submissions and working on the final draft, along with a three-year rolling Action Plan and Key Performance Indicators.

Staff spotlight is on …
With a background in building policy going back to 1994 when he commenced work for the then Department of Environment and Planning, Noel Mensforth has been happily doing risk management for level crossings since 2017, and based at Norwood for just over a year. “Great culture, really nice people … the most important boxes for any workplace have been ticked,” says the Senior Policy Officer in the Level Crossings Unit.
When not playing an important role in improving road safety, Noel plays bass guitar and sings with The Public Servants, who last year released their appropriately named Burockracy EP.
