A Friday Note - 18 August 2017

SAFETY

We continue to work hard to make our roads safer for all users, through major works, maintenance and safety campaigns. However, the safety message still needs to be spread wider. Already this year, preliminary figures show that of the 38 vehicle occupants who have died on our roads so far this year, 16 were not wearing a restraint.
As of midnight on Thursday, August 17 there had been 59 fatalities on South Australian roads so far this year.

CYBER SECURITY

The cyber security threat to organisations and governments continues to grow and so too does the need for greater security awareness. We have recently reviewed our current security awareness training, which has been upgraded for inclusion within ELMO.

PARLIAMENT

It has been a busy time in Parliament for Planning and Transport Policy, and Commercial and Legal staff. In the past couple of weeks, two Bills have been passed through Parliament: the Local Government (Boundary Adjustment) Amendment Bill and the Statutes Amendment (Heavy Vehicle Fees) Bill.
Robust debate continues on the Statutes Amendment (Drink and Drug Driving) Bill, which has been passed by the Legislative Council.
Well done to all the staff involved in preparing all the necessary documentation, briefing Ministers and Members, and attending Parliament to support debate.

AWARD WINNER

Greg van Gaans from Customer and Information Services Directorate won the coveted Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Award (APSEA) for 2017 Professional of the Year. The APSEA awards celebrate achievements of the spatial industry and showcase the finest projects and most significant performance of professionals that the Spatial Industry has to offer.  Projects and individuals attaining recognition at this premier event and deemed to be truly outstanding achievers and pre-eminent in their field. Greg was nominated due to his long history progressing innovation in the spatial industry and also for supporting many spatial professionals in education, industry and government.

COMMENDATION

Congratulations as well to DPTI staff at Leigh Creek for their service and responsiveness. During a six-week trial pilot training course by FTA Parafield for Cathay Pacific, engineers noticed propeller damage caused by gravel being thrown up during slow taxi manoeuvres. This was cleared away quickly by DPTI staff. Well done to Brad Davidson for making this happen so quickly, and good work by the Outback Communities Authority team, Mark Sutton and Rob Stack – good collaboration and service to the community.
