A Friday Note - 14 November 2014
Each week I pen these notes across the department (and made available publicly) to encourage discussion and debate. The ‘weather note’ fires up people outside Adelaide, where conditions are often different. I am sure there are other differences of opinion. This is a good thing. (And Adelaide weather continues to fluctuate wildly.)
In the past few months I have been delighted with the feedback, the energy from our staff in rejuvenating what we do in serving the public. Unlocking your inner creativity has unleashed a tsunami of great ideas. Now to implement. Of course, there always issues and I need all the help I can get.
This is a particular focus and passion of mine, as is serving our customers. “Can we do better?” is always worth asking. For example, what are your ideas about limiting excessive speeding in motor vehicles?
As we work through feedback on the draft structure, the opportunity to consolidate our safety focus within one area has resulted in Risk Assurance and Rail Systems, formerly proposed within Operational Services, moving into the Safety Strategy stream within Safety and Policy Programs. The Learning and Development component will move to Corporate.
Similarly, last week I mentioned wanting to hear your thoughts on opportunities to combine and consolidate functional areas including Prosecutions and Audit, Compliance and Intelligence functions, investigations and centres of excellence. Many people have provide feedback on these which is currently under consideration.
I have asked Jodieann Dawe to act as Chief Operating Officer for the next six months as I aim to advertise the permanent position March/April next year. Jodieann has real strengths in the people side of our business and will support our managers in road and rail as a starting point. Vicki Seaman will work closely with Jodieann in the operations division people space while Mick Petrovski will work with Jodieann in our operational business reform unit. I hope that Jodieann can spend more of her time at Regency Park, Mile End, Adelaide Railway Station and Walkley Heights, for example, than I have been able to do so far.
Next round of announcements. With more than 300 applications, the decision-making process is still underway and we hope to be in a position to announce these interim positions next week.
I am encouraged by the sheer number of applications received in response to the expression of interest, which provides a true reflection that people at all levels of our organisation are on board with the change.
The General Manager roles have been advertised this week and applications will close COB Friday 28 November 2014. From there we will quickly move to appointing people on a longer term basis. Well done to Keith Saunders, one of our train drivers. I have received commendation on his customer focus while driving the Seaford train Tuesday morning, when doors failed on one carriage. Keith ensured that at every stop customers were informed as to the issue and where they were required to enter and exit.
A fantastic effort by finance officer Dani Pollard. Dani started with us in February looking at debt recovery and in nine months has managed to recover almost $1m. Great work!
Congratulations to Traffic and Access Standards trainee Laura Dodd, who was awarded not only Business Student of the Year, but overall Student of the Year with Maxima – fantastic effort.
The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute has earned the National Commendation for Public Architecture in the National Architecture Awards held last week. Congratulations to all who worked to deliver this project.
