Safety on three roads in the Fleurieu and Adelaide Hills areas will be improved through shoulder sealing and the installation of safety barriers.
Blackwood to Goolwa Road, Cudlee Creek to Lobethal Road and Burnside to Balhannah Road will have a combined total of nearly 5 kilometres of shoulder sealing and 7.5 kilometres of safety barrier being installed.
The preliminary works on the Blackwood to Goolwa Road will recommence on 3 January.
The upgrade on this stretch of road includes about 2.5 kilometres of shoulder sealing and the installation of a total of 3.5 kilometres of safety barrier at various locations between Chandlers Hill and Meadows.
Sealing shoulders improves safety for motorists by reducing the risk of ‘run-off road’ type crashes.
Safety barriers protect road users from roadside hazards, thereby minimising the severity of vehicle accident injury and property damage.
The works at the other locations include:
An investment of $1.5 million is being made towards these important works.
Motor Accident Commission Chief Executive Officer, Aaron Chia said the upgrades were funded as part of MAC’s Road Safety Infrastructure Fund.
"These upgrades will improve safety on these key routes for locals and visitors alike," he said.
"We know that most road fatalities occur in regional South Australia and this work will improve road safety in the area."
Every effort will be made to minimise the impact on road users during construction hours. The roads will remain open with traffic restricted to one lane under temporary traffic signals during working hours, between 7.00 am and 5.30 pm, Monday to Friday.
DPTI advises a 25 km/h speed restriction will apply when workers are on site, with 80 km/h speed restriction in place at other times until the works are complete. All works are expected to be completed by the end of March 2016, weather permitting.
Traffic lights will be upgraded at the intersection of South Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
Safety will soon be improved at the Angle Vale Road intersection with Curtis Road and McGee Road at Penfield Gardens.
