Works to address three black spots in the Fleurieu Peninsula, Murray Mallee and Adelaide Hills have started.
The $1.37 million works, funded by the State Government’s Black Spot Program, will improve the Blackwood to Goolwa Road, Meadows to Willunga Road and Mannum to Murray Bridge Road.
On the Fleurieu Peninsula, the Blackwood to Goolwa Road project will see construction of a dedicated north-bound left-turn lane for traffic turning into Nangkita Road and the installation 300 metres of safety barrier. Furthermore, a 260 metre section of road will be widened for south-bound vehicles to safely pass a stationary vehicle turning right into Nangkita Road. Since 2008 there have been four recorded casualty crashes at this location.
In the Adelaide Hills, Meadows to Willunga Road will have three kilometres of shoulder sealing completed and 300 metres of safety barrier installed near Blackfellows Creek, Kuitpo.
In the Murray Mallee, nine new impact-absorbing, LED street lights will be installed at the intersection of Nilpena Road and Bigmore Road near Murray Bridge.
Construction will take place on all three projects between 7.00 am to 5.00 pm on weekdays, with works expected to be completed by April, weather permitting.
The roads will remain open to traffic with minor lane restrictions in place while the works are being undertaken. Every effort will be made to minimise the impact on road users during construction hours. There will be a 25 km/h speed restriction when workers are on site.
The department has committed to improve safety along its transport networks and to provide some practical responses to incidents of object throwing.
The South Australian Registrar of Motor Vehicles will refuse the registration of light vehicles fitted with defective Takata ‘Alpha’ type airbag inflators from 1 November 2018 until they are rectified to ensure the safety of all road users.
The lowered motorway constructed as part of the $801 million Torrens Road to River Torrens Project Torrens will be opened to traffic on Saturday 29 September.
Preliminary works for the upgrade of the Main North Road intersection with Dalkeith Road and Smith Road are currently underway, with Telstra early works to commence from Wednesday 5 September.
