Major construction works have started on an upgrade to the Augusta Highway near Mambray Creek.
The works will include the extension of the south bound left-hand turn lane and construction of a dedicated right-hand turn lane from Augusta Highway into Mount Remarkable National Park Road.
Also, access to the rest area located near the entrance to Mount Remarkable National Park Road will fixed to avoid conflict points that currently exist.
In 2012 there was a crash at this location resulting in one death, a serious injury and a minor injury.
These works will improve safety for motorists by reducing the risk of rear end and right turn crashes.
In February 2014, the Government via the Motor Accident Commission invested $20 million to upgrade three key routes, including the Augusta Highway.
MAC Chief Executive Officer Aaron Chia said he was pleased that almost $1.3 million from the MAC Road Safety Infrastructure Fund would be used to improve the safety of this section of the Augusta Highway.
"This is a very busy stretch of the highway with almost 3500 vehicles using this road every day," Mr Chia said.
"An upgrade like this provides a safer environment for all travellers, as well as those motorists who use it regularly."
Road users are reminded to abide by the 25 km/h speed restriction when workers are in the area, as well as any other speed restrictions that may be required during the course of the works.
Construction will take place between 7.00am and 5.00pm on weekdays and weekends when workers are on site and every effort will be made to minimise the impact on road users during these times.
I thank motorists for their patience while these important road safety improvements are undertaken.
Weather permitting, works are expected to be completed by the end of March and enquiries can be directed to email@example.com or by calling 8648 5211.
Traffic lights will be upgraded at the intersection of South Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
Safety will soon be improved at the Angle Vale Road intersection with Curtis Road and McGee Road at Penfield Gardens.
