Safety is to be improved along Bay Road between Percy Street and Railway Terrace, Mount Gambier, starting on Saturday 14 February.
Road Safety Minister Tony Piccolo said these important safety works involve the installation of a painted median, which separates opposing traffic flows and provide sheltered right turn lanes into side roads.
“These improvements assist with traffic management in the area and reduce the risk of rear end crashes,” Minister Piccolo said.
“The project also sees the installation of bike lanes which will operate from Monday to Friday, between the hours of 7.30am and 9.00am and again between 4.30pm and 6.00pm.
“When works begin, the asphalt will be resurfaced followed by line marking. In order to minimise the disruption to the local community during this time, asphalting works will be undertaken on the weekend and at night time during the week.”
The works represent a $320,000 investment through the State Government’s Responsive Road Safety Program and are expected to be completed by the end of February 2015, weather permitting.
Bay Road will remain open to traffic with lane restrictions in place while the works are being undertaken. Some short term closures to side roads may be required to enable the works to be undertaken safely and as quickly as possible.
Advanced signage will be visible in the area to notify motorists of the works and local businesses will receive correspondence.
Mr Piccolo reminded road users to abide by the 25 km/h speed restriction when workers were on site, as well as any other speed restrictions that may be in place as required during the course of the works.
A new shared use bridge for cyclists and pedestrians has been completed, improving access and safety as part of the $160 million O-Bahn City Access Project.
Changes to the conditional registration scheme for Historic, Left Hand Drive and Street Rod vehicles start from 1 July 2017
Traffic lights will be upgraded at the intersection of South Road and Sir Donald Bradman Drive.
Safety will soon be improved at the Angle Vale Road intersection with Curtis Road and McGee Road at Penfield Gardens.
