Road safety innovation in Kent Town

12 Jan 2015

Works are under way to install a raised junction platform at Rundle Street and The Parade West in Kent Town to help slow vehicles down, improving safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.

The raised platform is similar to speed humps, with the key difference being that the elevation is of the entire junction, some 100mm above the existing road surface level.

This solution is a first on an arterial road in South Australia, with research showing that a raised platform is an effective way to slow motorists down.

Between 2004 and 2013 there were 29 crashes at the junction, with the majority being right turn or right angle crashes, so this vital upgrade will be a huge benefit to the regular commuters in this area.

Works are expected to be completed by May 2015, weather permitting and will also include the installation of signage alerting motorists to the platform, upgrades to lighting at the junction and improvements to the local drainage system.

Most construction will occur at night between 7:00pm and 6:00am to minimise impact on traffic and local businesses. If construction works during the day are required, speed, lane and parking restrictions will be in place.

DPTI advises that every effort will be made to minimise noise to nearby residents, however some noise will be unavoidable during this period and access to properties will be maintained throughout construction.

An investment of around $350,000 towards the raised platform has been made from the State Government’s Responsive Road Safety Program. The initiative forms part of Road Safety Action Plan 2013-2016 towards achieving a reduction in serious road casualties by at least 30 per cent by 2020.
