Road rules refresher a hit

26 Feb 2013

The State Government’s Road Rules Refresher campaign is generating strong interest among drivers just two months after its launch with a reprint of the pocket guide and thousands of hits to the online videos.

Road Safety Michael O’Brien said the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) campaign has been embraced by drivers keen to ensure their road rules knowledge is up to date and they’re safe on the roads.

“With more than 100,000 pocket guides distributed, more than 15,000 visitors to the website and almost 8,200 people already taking the online quiz, it shows that drivers want to brush up on their knowledge,” Mr O’Brien said.

“It is results like these that show people really want to do the right thing.”

The campaign includes a pocketbook for quick reference that can be kept in the console or glove-box of the car, an online quiz to check your current knowledge and 11 online media clips that explain some of the more common mistakes made on our roads.

Mr O’Brien said he encouraged all drivers, motorcyclists and cyclists to take a few minutes to watch the clips or take the online quiz and put their road rules knowledge to the test.

“Road Rules Refresher looks at everything from giving way, to overtaking, roundabouts, Uturns, merging and more,” Mr  O’Brien said.

“Results so far from the online quiz show 75 per cent of questions have been answered correctly.”

The top three questions answered incorrectly are:

  •     When must you keep left on a multi-lane road (Question 3)
  •     Which vehicle must give way when giving way at an uncontrolled intersection (Question 1)
  •     Which vehicle must give way when giving way at a controlled intersection (Question 6)
“Simple misunderstandings can lead to serious consequences. By undertaking this simple test you can see where you need to brush up,” Mr O’Brien said.

“And with more people refreshing their knowledge and awareness of the road safety rules, accidents will be less likely to occur.”
