P1 conditions

If you have a P1 provisional licence, you can be fined, get demerit points or lose your licence if you:

  • drive more than 10km/h over the speed limit
  • drive faster than 100km/h, even if the speed limit is more than that
  • get more than 4 demerit points
  • drive after drinking alcohol or taking drugs
  • drive without P plates
  • drive any vehicle other than the type of vehicle listed on your permit
  • drive a high-powered vehicle if you are under 25 years old and don't have an exemption
  • use a mobile phone of any kind, including hands-free, while driving
  • drive without your P1 licence with you.

If you're under 25 years old and you don't have a qualified supervising driver next to you:

  • you can't drive between midnight and 5:00am
  • you can't have more than one passenger aged 16 to 20 years, unless they are immediate family members.
  • If you're driving to school, remember that passenger restrictions apply to P1 Licence holders under the age of 25. Immediate family members are exempt so you can take a brother or sister but you can only carry one friend aged 16 to 20. This law applies at any time of day or night unless a qualified supervising driver is seated next to you or you meet the exemption criteria.
  • The conditions on learner's permits and provisional licences are strict, but they're like that because your chances of an accident are highest when you haven't had much driving experience.
  • Research shows young drivers take more risks, and are 4-5 times more likely to be involved in fatal crashes, when they have 2 or more passengers their own age.
