Recognition of Interstate Marine Qualifications

We will recognise a certificate issued in another state providing that it is current and valid and not restricted (discussed below) in the issuing State or Territory and listed in the attached Notice of Recognition.  It is important to remember that we are only recognising your original certificate, not issuing you with a South Australian certificate, so you must keep the original certificate valid.  You may wish to print and retain a copy of the notice with your certificate as evidence of your certificates recognition in South Australian waters. There is no cost or need to apply for recognition if your certificate is listed on the notice.

However, if your certificate is restricted in any way and one or more of the following applies to your certificate then you will need to apply for a notice of recognition:

  • Certificate was issued prior to USL code; or
  • Certificate does not have an expiry date;
  • Certificates containing and endorsement, that relates to specific imitations/restrictions of which there is no exact SA equivalent.

The above are just a few of the reasons for having to apply for a notice of recognition for full details of the certificates that are subject to a case by case assessment go to Notice of Recognition.

  • Paperwork and Payment
  • Complete an Application for a Certificate of Competency and provide your original certificate.
  • Payment of the certificate of recognition fee

You must maintain your original certificate and renew or revalidate it on expiry and then apply to us for a further recognition at that time.

We will contact the issuing State/Territory to confirm that the certificate is current and valid and has not been suspended.
