Taking the Steps to Apply for a Marine Certificate of Competency

To start your marine career just complete the following steps:

  1. Read about the Certificate of Competency you want, download the forms and the checklist.
  2. Have your medical and eyesight form, which includes colour vision testing, completed by your doctor.
  3. Get sea service experience.
  4. Find out what training you need from a training provider.
  5. Send your completed forms, identification and other requirements from the checklist and pay the fees.
  6. Pass the training course.
  7. Complete an oral exam.
  8. Once you have passed and the paperwork is complete we will send you a Certificate of Competency.

If you do have problems with your medical fitness or eyesight it can affect what Certificate of Competency you are able to have and in some cases you may not be eligible to obtain one. It may be to your advantage to have this checked prior to commencing your training course.

It is also recommended that prior to commencing your training course it is recommended that you have your sea service assessed to ensure it meets the certificate level that you are applying for.

Commercial Marine Qualifications require you to provide all of the information prior to starting the training course but before you can undertake an oral examination all of the required documentation must be received.

You can submit your payment on online or you can print out the documents and send them to us.

Please use our checklist to ensure all the requirements are met.
