SA ready and raring to go on P21s

Building the Education Revolution (BER) round one Primary Schools for the 21st Century (P21) projects, funded by the Australian Government’s Nation Building-Economic Stimulus Plan, are now well underway in South Australia.

Individual site specific contracts having been let to all builders at 105 school sites and many builders are now on site following the start of school holidays on 3 July 2009.

Building contractor Tonkin Schutz Design and Build Pty Ltd (Tonkin Schutz) will shortly be laying the slab for the construction of a new hall at Clovelly Park Primary School. A temporary road has also been established for the works and site huts put up.

The new hall will be a wonderful new asset for Clovelly Park Primary School and will provide students with access to a facility that will enhance the school’s Physical Education program.

Students can be involved in physical activity, regardless of the weather with the added features of a performance area, kitchenette and toilets. It is anticipated that the hall will also be made available for community use in the future.

Classroom refurbishment works are also scheduled at Clovelly Park Primary School. The classroom refurbishment works will provide students with an environment that allows greater flexibility and creativity for teachers and students and reflects the diverse needs of the 21st Century learner.

Tonkin Schutz also has a further two round two P21 school projects. As a result of the additional work, Tonkin Schutz has hired another nine people as either Project Managers or administration personnel for the BER projects with ten trainees involved in the BER program.  Additional training has also been provided to their staff in preparation for the commencement of the BER works.

Tonkin Schutz has outsourced some of the work to other companies and utilised in house skills where they have the spare capacity. To account for the extra work, Tonkin Schutz is also completing an expansion of their current premises and has purchased new plant equipment.
