Ashford Special School – Case Study
Ashford Special School has received an accessible general learning area that will provide a state-of-the-art facility for the school’s children with special needs, including identified intellectual disabilities and other related disabilities or disorders. This includes some students in wheelchairs and others with significant visual impairments.
The project reached practical completion on 29 January 2010.
The contract for the project was let to Sitzler for the construction of the new portable building for the school. The design of the building is the product of a successful collaboration between Sitzler, the Principal and the school’s staff.
The building includes external covered areas connecting the building to the rest of the school. The area is utilised by the senior students as part of their horticulture curriculum and is an example of the flexibility of design that creates maximum usage for all at the school.
Both students and staff are already benefitting from the new classroom and its facilities including the installation of a SmartBoard to enhance the children’s learning and provide teaching options to cater for their varying special needs ensuring their learning is immediate and accessible.
Ashford Special School’s Principal has acknowledged the outstanding work that was undertaken by the Building the Education Revolution project team and the building company Sitzler. Team members from the Office of the Coordinator-General have also visited Ashford Special School to view the final product and are pleased with the outcome.
