The public has a right to access information held by government bodies. This is known as 'freedom of information' (FOI). This might include personal details, policy documents or administrative decisions.
The Freedom of Information Act 1991 helps make the South Australian Government more open and accountable. Under this Act, you have a legal right to get information held by most government agencies. However, some exemptions apply, such as privacy.

If you are not satisfied with our decision about your FOI request, you can apply for an internal review.

You can also ask Ombudsman SA to conduct a free external review if:
To do this, you must submit the review application to Ombudsman SA within 30 days of the decision date. Ombudsman SA can extend this time limit if they choose.
If you are still not satisfied with the decision, you can appeal to the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT). SACAT can review decisions made by agencies or Ombudsman SA.
To do this, you must apply for an appeal to SACAT within 30 days of the decision date. SACAT will determine any costs, if applicable.
