Moving Right Along


Information sheets 

Moving Right Along: Obligations and Opportunities for Older Drivers is a a resource for communities, individuals, families and friends that provides information about issues facing older drivers, driving safely and alternatives to driving. The program encourages safer, greener and more active travel for older South Australians.

A series of Information Sheets provide details about: 

  • maintaining the ability to drive safely and effectively for longer
  • the effects that ageing, medical conditions and medications have on driving
  • maintaining mobility and preparing to drive less or giving up driving altogether
  • helping a family member or friend face the issue of reducing or giving up driving
  • fitness to drive, the Driver Medical Assessment and Practical Driving Assessment
  • the legal obligations of licensed drivers in South Australia
  • motorised mobility scooters.

Workshops

Moving Right Along resources have been developed by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).  Currently there are a number of workshops being delivered by COTA SA on behalf of (DPTI).  

These workshops are available to seniors’ clubs and groups within South Australian metropolitan locations as well as the South East/Mount Gambier, Yorke Peninsula, and Port Pirie regions.

Each session is FREE and interactive. Participants receive the Moving Right Along - Obligations and Opportunities For Older Drivers information pack containing 11 fact sheets.

Session 1: Older drivers, safer vehicles, fitness to drive and assessments (1hr)
Topics:

  • Maintaining the ability to drive safely and effectively for longer
  • Fitness to drive - what does this mean?
  • The effects that ageing, medical conditions and medications have on driving
  • Types of assessments
  • Legal obligations of licensed drivers in South Australia
  • Sources of information and support available

Session 2: Travel options and retiring from driving (1hr)
Topics:

  • Options for personal car travel - positive and negative aspects of considering and/or using alternative modes of transport
  • Retiring from driving
  • Helping a family member or friend face the issue of reducing or giving up driving
  • What to do if you are worried about someone's driving
  • Legal obligations of licensed drivers in South Australia
  • Sources of information and support available

Session 3: Motorised Mobility Scooters (1 hr)
Topics:

  • What rules apply for motorised mobility scooter users?
  • Purchasing a motorised mobility scooter
  • Is a motorised mobility scooter the right choice for me?
  • Safe route planning
  • Safe rider practices
