YWCA of Adelaide received a Community Grant for two work bikes, safety equipment and accessories which enabled them to deliver a project where staff replaced using their own cars, work vehicles or catching taxis with riding a bike to attend meetings.
The project has influenced the ongoing culture of the organisation with the Chief Executive Officer and senior staff committed to using the bikes, providing positive role modelling.
At 6 months and 12 months staff were surveyed to map how their travel behaviour had changed. Results revealed a reduction in over 350 vehicle kilometres travelled with 60% of staff indicating that they had used the work bike more than they had expected.
Staff continue to ride the work bikes to travel to meetings within the CBD as it provides an opportunity for them to get around quickly, save on parking fees and the incidental exercise contributes to a healthier workplace.
