DPTI has diverse responsibilities in relation to the transport system and services, energy and policy regulation, and infrastructure planning for South Australia. It has a strong commitment to the employment and development of graduates.
The department recruits a number of graduates each year from a variety of areas:

- business (e.g. accounting, information technology, management and community consultation/engagement

- engineering (e.g. civil, environmental)
- forensic science
- journalism
- marketing
- urban and regional planning
- policy development
- property management and valuation
To work in the department, applicants need to register with the Graduate Register in the first instance and be eligible to be recruited as a graduate. At the Graduate Register, eligible graduates can upload their registration and when a vacancy needs filling in their area of expertise, their registration will be carefully considered.
Accounting graduates are also recruited through the Department of Treasury and Finance program.
