The department offers the following entry level recruitment programs:
Graduate program
Recent university graduates are recruited from a range of disciplines including civil engineering and related areas, environmental sciences, accounting, law, marketing and statistics, business administration and the arts through the Graduate Register. At the Graduate Register, graduates can upload their registration and when a vacancy needs filling in their area of expertise, their registration will be carefully considered.
Technical officer development scheme
This program recruits para-professionals who have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in a recognised discipline, for example spatial information systems or civil engineering. The scheme provides extensive on the job training in a range of areas such as planning, design and traffic engineering.
Traineeships
These programs are aimed at encouraging young people to seek employment in a range of areas across the DepartmentI including human resources, finance and information technology. We also offer traineeships in civil construction jobs, particularly operating heavy machinery like rollers, front end loaders, water carts, graders and tip trucks.
Apprenticeships
The Department offers apprenticeship opportunities to unqualified people, enabling them to gain a trade qualification in a required skills area. Apprenticeships usually run for three to four years and involve on the job training and one or two days studying at TAFE or another Registered Training Organisation.
Cadetships
The Department provides opportunities for the recruitment of untrained young people. Cadets complete on the job training while studying formal qualifications in areas like human resources. If you are a full-time student, seeking financial support to complete your studies and wish to gain eight weeks vacation employment each year during your studies, a cadetship with the department may be suitable for you.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment
The Department has a range of employment opportunities for Aboriginal people across all disciplines and employment types, including traineeships and cadetships.
