Way2Go is a program for safer, greener and more active travel for South Australian primary schools and their communities.

As a Way2Go Focus teacher, you are the main contact for information exchange between your school and the Way2Go team at the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure.

You are instrumental in your school’s successful participation in the program.

Your responsibilities include:

  • being the first point of contact for program initiatives and updates
  • assisting in the development and implementation of your site's School Travel Plan
  • coordinating teaching programs as an essential requirement of your school’s commitment to being a Way2Go site
  • coordinating and submitting orders electronically, distributing the Way2Go Information for families and Home infos relevant to Way2Go classroom activities
  • networking with local participating schools
  • attending Way2Go training and development sessions.

Go online to the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure’s Road safety website www.dtei.sa.gov.au/roadsafety

Way2Go Home info is a series of brochures that complement the teaching component of the Way2Go program in participating schools. The brochures contain information, related road rules, ideas for safer, greener and more active travel and activities for children and their families to share.

When Way2Go topics are taught at school, the Focus teacher orders the relevant Home info brochures for students to take home and have available for reference. The Home info brochures are:

  • Way2Go Information for families which introduces the complete Way2Go program and is available to all families whose child/children attend a school participating in the program
  • Way2Go Home info 1-35 for students in the Early and Primary Years (Reception to Year 5) and linked to Topics in the Teacher resources (Early and Primary Years) that have been taught in class
  • Way2Go Home info 36-40 for students in the Middle Years (Years 6 to 7) and linked to Units in the Middle Years Teacher resource.
  • Way2Go Information for families and Home info 1-35 are also available in Arabic, Chinese and Pitjantjatjara languages and can be ordered online.

Home info is only available to schools participating in the Way2Go program. There is a Way2Go Home info for each Topic in the Early and Primary Years, and for each Unit in the Middle Years.
When planning a unit of work, list the Way2Go Home info required for the students in your class. Your school’s Way2Go Focus teacher orders the relevant Home info electronically, through this website. Ordered resources are sent direct to the school for distribution to students.

Fact sheets contain current information on a range of topics presented in the Teacher resource books. They are available as printable PDF files on the CD provided in each Way2Go kit and provide ready access to the facts relevant to Australian law and conditions.

A School Travel Plan draws together all components of the Way2Go program.

  • School Travel Plans are unique to each participating school.
  • They are published online as PDF files.
  • Plans have five-year duration. During the fifth year, planning for the next five-year period occurs.
  • An education consultant from DTEI’s Way2Go team assists each school in developing their plan.
  • School Travel Plans encourage safer, greener and more active travel for children's school journeys.

School Travel Plans include:

  • a school profile
  • an overview of the local government council's plan for improving walking and cycling facilities leading to local schools
  • an active travel plan and range of associated resources, initiatives and events
  • a teaching program across Early Years, Primary Years and Middle Years and incorporating use of Way2Go resources
  • plan for distributing Way2Go Home info for students and their families.

The opportunity for full participation in the program depends on when your council is approached by DPTI and commits to the program. Schools are invited to participate in Way2Go after their local government council has agreed to participate.

  • DPTI approaches a local government council to introduce the program and engage interest of key staff and councillors.
  • Council commits to Way2Go and prepares a 3-5 year plan that focusses on improving travel routes to schools within the council area. This may include new treatments, improvements to existing footpaths or crossings and facilities to encourage safer, greener and more active travel to schools.
  • DPTI then approaches all schools with a primary enrolment in the participating local government area. Program information is presented to senior management and all staff, and the decision to participate in Way2Go is made.

However, as Way2Go kits for Early, Primary and Middle Years have been distributed to all South Australian schools with a primary enrolment, schools that have not yet had the opportunity to participate in the program can develop teaching programs using the resource materials. They will not have access to the Way2Go Home info (password protected ordering).

Meanwhile, contact your council to find out what they are doing to encourage safer, greener and more active travel in your community.
